Ethical Principles
Ethical dilemmas can occur no matter what position one my hold in the medical field. It is important that an individual knows how to
handle an ethical dilemma. By knowing, the correct way to defuse adilemma, unfavorable consequences can be prevented such as litigation, scarring one’s reputation, professional-patient conflict, etc. In AU’s Healthcare Policy and Ethic course, I learned how to analyze the consequence and action which leads to the best decision in defusing an ethical dilemma.

Leadership and Advocacy
A part of being a leader is advocating for patients and fellow cohorts. Patients and families deserve to expect high standards of care from their medical team. Nurse Practitioners (NP) play an essential role in ensuring that patients receive the best available care. Advocating for patient's rights ensures that the patient is the center of care, promoting safety and quality care. As mentioned earlier, NPs must also be advocates for each other. Advocating for associates means supporting and promoting positive changes at both the organizational and legislative levels, especially during a time when there are uncertainties in healthcare, emerging new technology, workforce shortage, etc. Therefore, leadership and advocacy is an ideal characteristic for a NP to possess.

Diversity; Cultural Competence
The medical field is a melting pot of cultures. Throughout my nursing career and NP preceptorship, I have had the pleasure of being exposed to
various cultures and beliefs. I realized that in order to be culture competent, nurses must understand their personal views and the patient beliefs. Once culture awareness has been obtained the next step is applying the knowledge gained in the clinical situation to improve the patient’s trust and ultimately, the outcome. At times this may be difficult but it can be achieved through understanding and embracing diversity, self awareness, being able to adapt to change, etc.

Information Technology
Information technology (IT) such as electronic health records (EHRs) has become an imperative component of health care. EHRs make it possible for health care providers to manage and share patients' health information through secure channels. During my preceptorship I had the opportunity to assist in transferring paper charts into electronic health records. The process was tedious but well worth it. EHRs not only allow providers to share and manage information; it allows them access to evidenced-base protocols that assist in directing patients’ care. Another exposure that I had to IT during my MSN program was through the use of the Medatrax application. In Medatax I documented patient interaction by means of focus, comprehensive, and SOAP notes as shown above.
